I want to use in-portal as a directory only where visitors don't need to create a login so want to deactivate the login box as well as remove my account, any ideas?

There is a setting in Admin Console, that describes how user can register. By default it's allowing users to be created in Pending status with further Admin approval.

But there is an option to disable user registration too.

Please see "Configuration -> Users -> General" section in Admin Console.
